The first Work Programme of the new European Commission has finally been announced following lengthy delays. The programme sets out the Commission’s priorities for the rest of the year, including a range of legislative and non-legislative initiatives to be brought forward.
With the Lisbon Treaty now installed, a new Parliament and Commission, and Europe slowly recovering from the crisis, the Programme sees an opportunity for the Union to enter “a new era” of integration. From financial services and healthcare to energy and environment, the document sets out a busy schedule for the Commission for the remainder of the year.
Christian Hierholzer, Managing Director of hanover Brussels, reviews the 2010 Work Programme and looks at why Europe will continue to matter for businesses across all sectors of the economy.
